Grounding datalogger to VAC ground

ariklee Jan 24, 2018 09:34 PM

I have a CR1000x with AVW200 and AM16/32B. For power, I am using 120VAC line voltage via a 28370 (the Phoenix Contact power supply kit sold by Campbell), CH150, and 7 AHr battery. There is little danger of lightning-induced transients, as we are 1,000 feet underground in a mine.

Can I tie the grounds lugs on the CR1000x, AVW200, and AM16/32B to the mains power ground to bring everything to the same ground plane (and as the only ground for equipment)? And if not, why? Might this induce noise into the system, or will the battery act as a damper against noise?

AC power ground is noisy.

The datalogger does a good job of filtering out most of it on analog measurements when you use 60hz integration. The AVW200 uses signal processing to separate out the noise frequencies.

Thanks JDavis

So, is this an absolute "NO!", or is it more like "although AC power ground is noisy, make sure you use 60Hz integration in your analog measurements and everything should be OK..."?
